A 28-year-old man died Tuesday after fleeing an encounter with federal immigration agents in St. Augustine, Florida, and running into the path of a tractor trailer, authorities said.
The man was one of four occupants of a vehicle that stopped in the parking lot of a gas station and convenience store before 7 a.m., Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Dylan Bryan said. The four fled on foot during an encounter with agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations.
One of the four ran across State Road 16 and into the path of the semi, Bryan said. The truck’s driver stopped and tried to render aid, but the man died at the scene, according to Bryan.
Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security immediately responded to requests for comment.
It was the third death in about a week involving encounters with ICE agents, following shootings in Texas and Maine.
