Twenty schoolchildren and one adult died after a school bus crashed in eastern Uganda on Thursday night, authorities said.

The bus belonged to King David Junior School and was returning to Kampala after a trip to Sipi Falls when it crashed near Chekwatit village in Kapchorwa district, the Uganda Police Force said. The adult who died is believed to be the school’s founder and head.
Three other adults and more than a dozen children were injured, officials said. Ugandan Minister of Local Government Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi said on X that more than 28 children were being treated in hospitals, nine of them in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations suggested the driver lost control of the bus, which veered off the road and overturned after hitting a large stone, police said. Local residents arrived before official rescue teams and helped carry victims from the wreckage, according to footage from the Uganda Red Cross Society.
Uganda suspended all school trips and excursions effective immediately following the crash, the government said. The village where the crash occurred is near the Uganda-Kenya border, about 300 kilometers from Kampala.
Officials have not yet released the names or ages of the children killed. This is a developing story.
