7.4 quake strikes off Mexico coast, sparks tsunami threat

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck 71 kilometers west-southwest of Puerto Madero, Mexico, on Friday, according to Mexico’s national seismological service.

The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, the GeoShake Community Seismic Network said. Tremors were felt in Guatemala City and in neighboring El Salvador, Reuters reported.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat warning for areas along the Pacific coast. It said dangerous tsunami waves may occur along coastlines within 300 kilometers of the earthquake’s epicenter.

GeoShake said in a post on X that shaking varies by building and terrain, and that aftershocks are expected in the hours to days ahead. The network said there have been 22 earthquakes in the region in the last 30 days, and Friday’s quake is the largest magnitude observed in that span.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
