The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years on Saturday, beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to take the Finals four games to one. The third-seeded Knicks trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter in San Antonio before outscoring the Spurs 29-18 down the stretch to seal the franchise’s first title since 1973.
Jalen Brunson carried New York with 45 points, going 14 of 27 from the field and 13 of 15 at the free throw line. Josh Hart added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Mikal Bridges scored 14. Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, but the Spurs shot just 37.9 percent from the field and could not protect a fourth-quarter lead.
