U.S. Central Command began launching strikes against Iran at 5 p.m. ET Tuesday, CENTCOM announced, acting at the direction of the commander in chief.

CENTCOM said the strikes are self-defense in nature and described the mission as “a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression,” citing Iran’s downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter the previous day.
