President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed off stage at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night after gunshots were heard inside the Washington Hilton, Mail Online reported. CNN confirmed the president is “safe” and no injuries were immediately apparent.
Secret Service agents swarmed the banquet hall as hundreds of guests ducked under tables, with shouts of “out of the way” and “duck” heard across the room. Shouts of “God bless America” followed as the entire dais was led out, leaving many guests still inside.
The evacuation comes as protesters linked to the Iran War and Israel’s war on Hamas had been spotted both outside and inside the hotel ahead of the dinner. A shooter had not been identified as of Saturday evening, CNN reported.
Trump was attending the Correspondents’ Dinner for the first time since 2011 and had been set to speak at the event. He did not appear to notice the gunshots before being evacuated, according to Mail Online.
