Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 45-day ceasefire extension following two days of negotiations in Washington, the U.S. State Department announced, extending a truce that has been repeatedly tested since President Trump first brokered it last month.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the U.S. hopes the talks “will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border.”
The extension lands on the same day Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli air strikes killed 22 people across the south, including eight children, underscoring how strained the original agreement has become since Trump announced it.
Israel and Hezbollah have continued to exchange fire throughout the ceasefire period, raising questions about whether a 45-day extension, without a enforcement mechanism, meaningfully changes conditions on the ground.
