A Collin County jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder Tuesday for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet, according to the Daily Mail. The jury deliberated for less than three hours after closing arguments were delivered earlier in the day.
Anthony, now 19, had claimed self-defense, arguing that Metcalf provoked him during a heated argument at the Frisco event in April 2025. Witnesses testified that Anthony told Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens,” prompting Metcalf to push him, after which Anthony pulled a folding knife and stabbed Metcalf once in the chest, piercing his heart.
Collin County First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye rejected the self-defense claim in closing arguments. “You don’t get to meet a shove with a stab, especially if you provoke the shove,” Wirskye told jurors.
Anthony faces five to 99 years in prison. Under Texas law, the same jury will now determine his sentence after hearing additional evidence from both sides.
