McConnell says fall left him unconscious and he developed pneumonia

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Sunday that a fall left him briefly unconscious and led to his June 14 hospitalization, and that he dealt with a mild case of pneumonia while in the hospital, breaking weeks of silence about his health.

“I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital,” McConnell, 84, said in a statement. “While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”

McConnell said doctors confirmed he did not break any bones or suffer a concussion, heart attack or stroke, and that they found no tumors or hemorrhages. He said doctors are still working to determine what caused the fall, and that he has undergone a battery of tests.

He said he has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center and will not return to the Senate “quite yet,” adding that he continues to work with his staff on Senate business and is making what he called continued progress.

“Folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” McConnell said, adding that even in the public eye he feels that same instinct and cannot help it.

The statement included a photo of the senator smiling beside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, an implicit answer to online speculation that McConnell had died or was incapacitated. It is the first image of McConnell released since his hospitalization.

His office had said for weeks only that he was “receiving excellent care” and recovering. As the hospital stay stretched on, Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear asked McConnell to update the public about his health in a “transparent manner.”

McConnell is in his seventh Senate term and is not seeking reelection this year. He led Senate Republicans from 2007 to 2025.
