Russian drone strikes apartment building in NATO-member Romania, wounding two

A drone struck an apartment building in Galați, Romania and exploded early Friday, wounding two people, Romania’s defense ministry said. The attack coincided with a Russian drone strike on the Izmail port area just across the border in Ukraine, according to Romanian and Ukrainian authorities.

Romania’s defense ministry said Russia “resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania” during the night of May 28-29. Galați sits in Romania’s far southeast on the Ukrainian border; Izmail, directly across, is home to the largest Ukrainian port on the Danube River and has been a frequent Russian target.

Friday’s strike is not an isolated incident. Russian drones have breached Romanian airspace 28 times since Moscow began attacking Ukrainian ports across the Danube, Romania’s defense ministry said, according to Reuters. Romania is a member of both NATO and the European Union.

This is a developing story.
