A coalition of state attorneys general has opened an investigation into OpenAI and served the company Friday with a sweeping subpoena, according to people familiar with the matter.

The subpoena seeks documents across a wide range of topics, including advertising, user engagement and retention, consumer and health data, activities related to minors and seniors, deep learning models, model sycophancy, and company policies, some of the people said.
In a statement, an OpenAI spokesperson said, “AI is a new and powerful technology, and we work every day to safely bring its benefits to people in a responsible way. We take the concerns raised by state attorneys general seriously and intend to engage constructively with their offices.”
The investigation comes as OpenAI confidentially filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission this month. Additional details are expected as the story develops.
